Who Has The Power To Run The Online Community?
http://redditblog.com/2014/07/30/how-reddit-works/
The social network that I have chosen to use for the
weekly blog assessment is Reddit. I have perceived Reddit to be an empowering
network as its known as “The Front Page of the Internet” it is showcased as a virtual subcategory community forum formed
from anonymous online members sharing multiple sources for the world to view.
Being virtually seen as anonymous on a social network
is giving the user a sense of place and space as Tuan states “Place is security, space is freedom: we are attached to the one and
long for the other” (1977, p.3). I strongly believe
that Reddit offers the two components of Place and Space to members by having personal
information private to view from others accessing the network. Being able to
publically and privately post to a social networking community gives a sense of
security as they can then feel safe and voice their own opinions. Regardless of
right or wrong without being socially judged by the people surrounding them in
real life social network systems or online social network systems such as
Facebook or Twitter.
The space that is present within Reddit is the context
of connecting with other members by stories, questions and information entailing
in members to make their own space through stories that are shared. Power comes out of connections, out of
relationships- “instrumental’ or ‘associational’.
Power is not a thing it is ‘relational’. (Kuttainen, 2016)
In social networking systems there is always an authoritarian
placed in front of other members which over rides their power, place and space.
Reddit continues to provide equal opportunities to connect and network with all
members within categories the members solely choose to participate in. The
people in the online community build the web page from their own power which produces
a sense of value, freedom and openness.
