What is Right and Wrong?

The way members of Reddit are hidden gives the person the sense of having their own online identity as they provide information, stories and facts which can be seen as a language that they may not necessarily be used in the real world for socialising. This space can be seen as their own virtual community where they feel a sense of themselves in the community. In comparison to people in the real world, they wouldn’t feel as comfortable or obliged to talk about certain topics. As Tuan states that “The different ways by which language contributes towards the making of place may be shown by exploring a wide range of situations and cultural contexts” (1991, p.684). In regards to this concept I understand that everyone has a right to speak their own mind in an online network where as on Reddit the communities are very open and make a sense of space and place for people who escape to the online world.

Victoria has stated that “All systematic modes of interpretation (stories, art or science) MIGHT be equally valid, but they are rarely perceived as such.” This gives all of the online members to come to realisation of how different everyone’s sense of space, place, self and community is within the realm of Reddit. “The right to speak and be heard, the right to name and have that name “stick” is empowerment” (Tuan, 1991, p.685). Reddit gives you the power to have that empowerment and have the name “stick” when you are posting within the forum it gives you the opportunity to say what you want and have other people voice their perceived reality to the post. When a word doesn’t appear in the dictionary is it real? What makes a word real?
